One of the main reasons I started The Mutha Project was to create underwear with longevity, comfort, and ease.
Something I learned from my first pregnancy was that I would live in my maternity underwear for a very long time after my baby’s arrival. Sadly, I hadn’t realised this when I was buying cheap underwear to get by — the kind that lost its shape after a few washes.
By my second pregnancy, I was prepared to invest in quality pieces that would feel good while I was pregnant but still hold their integrity months after giving birth. This seemed impossible to find, so I decided to create my own brand — one that mums-to-be could buy into and trust to last as long as they needed them.
Let’s look at some of the biggest problems I found (and fixed).
1. Poor fit
Oh my goodness. I would pick up a pair of “maternity knickers” in store, hold them up and think, yes, they’ll fit.
But changing rooms are not the one when you’re pregnant — so I’d take them home, try them on in comfort, and end up so disappointed. The baggy shape offered no real support, just loose fabric waiting for my bump to fill it.
And don’t get me started on bras.
When it comes to maternity and postpartum underwear, comfort is all in the details — the threads, elastic, fabric texture, and even the label placement can make or break it.
2. Waste of money
Returning uncomfortable maternity underwear (and even being charged by some major stores to do it!) added up quickly.
Not to mention the bra I bought having nursing clips so once my 3 week old decided to stop breastfeeding, the bra was then redundant. And those baggy knickers which were designed to only stretch one way, were useless once my bump had gone.
3. Not just maternity underwear
After my first baby, I realised most of us never fully return to our pre-baby underwear. Our bodies change- hips, waist, everything and some of us have C-section scars that need extra TLC.
Those flimsy cotton pants aren’t going to do it.
Trust me when I tell you that you’ll live in your pregnancy underwear for at least a year postpartum, so it needs to be comfortable, supportive, and built to last.
4. Size confusion
Ask any woman what bra size she wears, and chances are she’s not entirely sure.
Now add pregnancy- changing breasts, no visible waist and it’s a guessing game.
You need underwear that adapts, not one that depends on static sizing.
5. How we fixed it?
The maternity underwear market needed shaking up and modernising.
We don’t have the disposable income we once did, so we want to invest in products that fit better, feel better, and last longer.
After five years of development, we found a specialist factory in Italy that uses warp-knit technology. This allows us to blend premium yarns that stretch and mould to your body at every stage- pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
By removing unnecessary hardware like clips and clasps, using flat transfer labels, soft stretch thread, brushed straps, and premium elastics, we’ve created seamless maternity underwear that’s genuinely comfortable and beautifully made.
